How to see the WiFi password from your mobile

If it is your firm intention see the WiFi password of the phone without rootSince you just don't want to expose your device to security risks, you can easily act using the built-in functions of the operating systems involved. In the following paragraphs I am going to explain to you how to act on both Android that of iOS.

Android

Some variants of Android integrate systems to be able to share (and, if necessary, view) the password of the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected with extreme simplicity.

For example, if you have a smartphone Xiaomi equipped with ROM MIUI, proceed like this: access the Settings operating system, by touching the d-shaped icongear placed on the Home screen, tap on the item Wi-Fi and then on name of the network you are connected to (identified by the wording Touch to share the password).

If everything went well, after a few moments, you should see a QR code containing the key (in clear text) of the Wi-Fi network in question. Now, if you have another device with a camera, you can easily read its content using one of the apps dedicated to the purpose, which I told you about in my guide on how to read a QR code or in my specific tutorials dedicated to Samsung, Huawei or iPhone.

If, on the other hand, you do not have this possibility, do this: take a screenshot of the screen containing the QR code (by pressing the key combination Power + Volume Down or through a special gesture), then connect to this website using the navigation app of your choice and tap on the icon of camera, which is at the top right.

Pray for the pulsating prize Choose file, tap the icon Fillet attached to the panel that is proposed to you and select, through the manager displayed on the screen, the screenshot realized previously: the password you are looking for should be displayed, within a few seconds, in the lower pane of the WebQR screen, together with the name of the network to which it refers.

If your smartphone does not have a built-in function for sharing the Wi-Fi network key, you can try to recover the password of the network you are connected to from the router panel, as I will explain later.

iPhone

If you own a iPhone, you can be able to see the password of the wireless networks saved in the latter by using a Mac matched to the same Apple ID and Access portachiavi, the utility included “standard” on Apple-branded computers, which manages the security credentials associated with your account and system.

To proceed, open the program, calling it from the folder Other of Launchpad (or from the menu Applications> Utilities), wait for its window to appear on the desktop and, when this happens, click on the item System collocata sotto the dicitura Keychains, located on the left sidebar.

Pray, fai clic sulla voce Password annexed to the section Category, identifies the name of the WIFI network of your interest in the list that appears on the right (helping you, if necessary, with the search field at the top) and, after identifying it, double-click on it to access the details.

If you do not see the name of the network "in clear", click on one of the items related to AirPort (whose column Keychains, as you can see, it is marked with the wording iCloud) and check that, next to the wording Account (above), the name of the Wi-Fi network for which you want to know the password is indicated. When you've found it, double-click it to view its details.

We are almost there: now put the check mark next to the item Show passwordI inserted the Mac password in the appropriate field and click on the button OK to move forward. If prompted, fill in the next screen stating the username and Password. To conclude, click on your button Allow and that's it: the password you are looking for should be displayed in clear text, instantly.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in sharing the password of the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected in a "direct" manner (but without displaying it) with an Apple branded device, you can use the system Continuity: if you didn't already know it, it is a proprietary technology that allows you to share some data, including the passwords of the wireless networks to which you are connected, between devices equipped with iOS, iPadOS and macOS. In order for everything to work smoothly, some very specific conditions must be met.

  • THEiPhone from which to start sharing must have on board iOS 11 or later and must be connected to the Wi-Fi network to share the password for.
  • The receiving device, which can be a Mac, another iPhone, an iPad or an iPod Touch, must be equipped with iOS 11 or lateriPadOSmacOS 10.12 or later.
  • All devices involved in sharing must have the Bluetooth. If you need help, you can check out my tutorial on how to turn on Bluetooth.
  • The devices involved must "know" each other in some way: for example, they can be associated with it Apple ID or be mutually present in their respective contact lists.

Once these conditions are met, do this: recall the screen for entering the password of the Wi-Fi network on the target device, bring theiPhone unlocked to the latter and answer affirmatively to the message indicating the password sharing request. Done! After a few moments, the “receiving” device should be able to connect to the Internet using the shared password.

If you do not have a Mac and / or the target device is not Apple branded, the only way to find the password of the Wi-Fi network you are connected to is to log into the router and read it from its configuration panel: I will explain how to proceed in the next chapter of this guide.

If, after following the instructions I have given you in the course of this guide, you have not been able to see the WiFi password from the phone, you can try to work around the problem by accessing the admin panel of the router which generates the network itself.

First of all, after connecting to the Wi-Fi network of your interest, you need to find the IP address of the router by following the instructions best suited to the operating system you are using.

  • Android - go to Settings> Network and Internet> Wi-Fi, do tap sul network name you are connected to and then on the item Advanced: the information you are looking for can be found in correspondence with the wording Gateway.
  • iOS - tap on the icon Settings, access the section Wi-Fi e tocca il pulsating (I) placed at the network you are connected to. The address you are looking for is specified next to the wording Router.

Now, start the browser you usually use to browse the Internet (eg. Google Chrome o Safari) and connect to the previously retrieved address: after a few moments, you should see a screen requesting the entry of the username and Password administration of the router, or only the latter.

If you've never changed this information, try signing in with admin / admin or admin / password, which are the default combinations for most network devices. If you are unable to log in using this information, you can check out my guide on how to see the modem password to deal with the problem.

Once logged in, access the main menu of the router (you may have to press the ☰ button or something similar) and use the items that are proposed to you to locate the section relating to Wi-Fi configuration and / or network security. If everything went smoothly, the information you are looking for should reside within one of the fields that appear on the next screen, presumably called Password.

For example, referring to my router (a AVM Fritz! Box 7530 with proprietary interface), you have to call up the main menu by touching the ☰ button and access the panel dedicated to displaying the network key, by touching the items Wi-FiSafety. The password is specified, in clear text, within the field Wireless network key.

Unfortunately, I cannot give you any additional details on what to do, as I am not aware of the router model you are using and, for obvious reasons, it is not possible for me to list all the procedures you can use. However, if you want some more tips on Netgear, D-Link or TP-Link branded devices, or on Alice, Fastweb, Infostrada or Vodafone modems, you can take a look at the tutorials I have dedicated to these devices.

Note: if the router's Wi-Fi network password has never been changed, you can also get it from the label stuck on the device (usually located at the bottom of the device, or on the side), on its sales package or, again, on the User Manual.
